We invite you to join Drawing New York founder Simon Levenson for two sessions of Introduction to Drawing for Beginners starting this Thursday from 6:30 – 9:00.
Sessions meet on April 11th and 18th and are limited to 6 students. Your single ticket is good for both dates.
This session will change the way beginners understand drawing and will set them in a direction to continue drawing long after our sessions are complete.
We meet in our new space located inside The National Arts Club on Gramercy Park South.
All materials are included.
This class is for beginner’s who want an organized approach to drawing, to speed up the learning process and prevent wasted and frustrating efforts.
Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing including, paper and pencil basics, how to use shape and form to create depth, measuring and proportion, and rendering form with shade.
What we will cover:
Paper: We will look at the difference between Sketch and Drawing paper, smooth and rough surfaces as well as those designed for pencils v. charcoal.
Pencils and Charcoal: Students will learn what different grades of pencils are designed for and how to use them to create better drawings. We will work with charcoal for a portion of the class to learn about this amazing tool. We will practice cross-hatching and shading with pencil “washes”.
Erasers: Using both kneaded and plastic erasers, students will create different drawing effects in their drawings.
Drawing: Students will engage in several exercises to create different drawings. Topics will cover, contour line, line quality and weight, negative and positive space, drawing with shape v. drawing with form, rendering with shade and measuring proportion.

Instructor Biography: Simon Levenson teaches oil painting at The Art Students League, and teaches drawing at The Morgan Library and Museum, The Museum of The City of New York and The National Arts Club. His oil paintings are represented by Cavalier Galleries Inc. in New York City, Greenwich Conn. and Nantucket. His work is permanently installed in the Beach 60th Street A Train Station as a large scale commission for the MTA Arts for Transit Program. He is the founder of Drawing New York.
