Join us a Portrait Drawing Workshop taught by artist and instructor Kelly Foss. Classes are limited to 6 students.
Class dates: Mondays, March 23, 30, April 6
Drawing the portrait from life in 3 sessions (1 pose for all sessions).
Week 1.) After we learn how to comfortably fit the model on our paper, we’ll jump right into “enveloping”, blocking in, and learning proportions. Using graphite pencils, we will draw the larger portions of our subject, working from the outside in. With the help of observing darks and lights, we will accurately subdivide the masses, creating the foundation of capturing the model’s likeness.
Week 2.) Learning about facial proportions, “triangulation” and point to point drawing, we’ll place and work on features while discussing the underlying skull structure, as well as neck and shoulders. I’ll demonstrate how to draw hair and abbreviated clothing.
Week 3.) Creating the 3D feeling of realism, we’ll spend time investigating form as revealed by shadow and light. We’ll work with white charcoal pencils as well as graphite pencils. While shading the portrait the power of subtly and “forced focus” will be realized, bringing the face to life, and finishing the portrait drawing.
Materials: Tan Strathmore series 400 drawing paper, 11” x 14”, General Pencil white charcoal, Graphite pencils, pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser. Tombow Mono Zero Refillable Eraser (round), General’s Factis Mechanical Eraser, handheld mirror.
There is never any photography allowed while models are posing. Headsets are okay for music so long as the volume is low enough not to be heard by others. Classical music is typically played at low levels during sessions.
For everyone’s safety, our room is monitored by a video camera. By signing up for sessions you are agreeing to and accept this arrangement.
