Join us for four Mondays of Portrait Painting in Oil taught by artist and instructor Kelly Foss. All materials are included. Classes are limited to 6 students.
January 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th and Feb 3rd.
Each attendee is provided oil paint, a canvas, brushes, an easel, stool with a back, disposable palette, Gamsol (odorless thinner) and a small table for supplies.
Week 1. Learn to observe proportions from life using comparative measure technique, draw the portrait onto the canvas.
Week 2. Continue the drawing, focusing on the correct placement of features. Learn what’s important to capture and what is best to generalize. Ink in the drawing and do a “wipeout” as a value study.
Week 3. Demo on the difference of form painting vs broad painting. Learn color theory and how to mix the colors you observe. Create the “first pass” of the painting.
Week 4. Discuss the importance of expressing a mood in the painting; the idea of “forced focus”, edge quality, and brushwork.
Week 5. Focus on the small details and creating a finished looking portrait painting.
Each attendee is provided an easel, stool with a back, disposable palette, Gamsol (odorless thinner) and a small table for supplies.
Painting can be stored during the month students are registered and should be taken on the completion of the final session.
Sessions are three hours with a clothed model in a single pose. A single pose will be held for all four sessions.
There is never any photography allowed while models are posing. Headsets are okay for music so long as the volume is low enough not to be heard by others. Classical music is typically played at low levels during sessions.
For everyone’s safety, our room is monitored by a video camera. By signing up for sessions you are agreeing to and accept this arrangement.
